But tokenization isn’t limited to payment systems—it can also apply to healthcare, banking, and any industry dealing with personally identifiable information (PII).


Tokenization vs. Encryption

While both aim to protect sensitive data, they differ:

  • Encryption transforms data into an unreadable format but can be decrypted back into its original form with a key.

  • Tokenization replaces data entirely with a meaningless substitute that cannot be mathematically reversed.

Together, these controls strengthen a layered defense strategy.
